Jane White, fully certified hypnotherapist and owner of Inspire Hypnotherapy has the answer:
Hypnotherapy is a natural therapy that utilises the power of positive suggestion. It is a skilled verbal therapy which taps into the subconscious mind whilst in hypnosis with the intention of altering perceptions, thoughts and behaviours.
The British Society of Clinical Hypnosis states “In therapy hypnosis usually involves the person experiencing a deep sense of relaxation with their attention narrowed down and focused on appropriate suggestions made by the hypnotherapist”.
These suggestions are designed to help individuals make positive changes within themselves. In a hypnotherapy session the client is always in control and will not be made to do anything they do not want to do.
There are many misconceptions that abound regarding hypnosis…it is not mind control; it is not a state of deep sleep and it cannot be used to induce you to do anything you do not want to do.
Quite simply, hypnosis involves the induction of a trance like condition similar to the feeling everyone experiences when falling to sleep. It allows you to experience an enhanced state of awareness enabling you to concentrate entirely on the voice of the hypnotherapist. In this trance like state your conscious mind is inhibited and your subconscious mind revealed. This allows the therapist to effectively help you deal with any irrational fears, phobias, negative thoughts, unwanted behaviours and suppressed emotions you wish to overcome.
For example, Kate wanted to overcome her fear of flying and had tried everything consciously to do this but the negative experience was rooted deep within her subconscious mind. After a couple of sessions of hypnotherapy, progress was made to overcome this phobia by reprogramming the subconscious mind so that her deep seated phobia of flying was removed allowing her to experience the joy of travelling.
